PROCEDURES
I mainly work with 52100 (ball baring steel) but do offer D2, ATS-34, 5160 and would work with other if requested. I do all heat treating in house with my evenheat kiln.
I choose 52100 as my main hunting knife steel becasue its ability to hold a great edge and be very flexible at the same time. I hand forge it from 3/4" round bar. I do three heat quenches at different stages of the forging process. These quenching allow me to refine the grain that give it its abilty to flex and hold a great edge. I then grind it out and give it a hand satin beforeĀ I start the four day heat treat process. I quench it three time with 24hr in the freeze between each time. Then temper three time at 400 degrees for two hours. I also do this process on 5160 as well.
